Edgware set for date with destiny against Malden Wanderers in ECB Club Championship
Edgware Cricket Club are set to travel to Surrey to take on Malden Wanderers in the preliminary round of the ECB Club Championship on Sunday 30th April 2023.
This is the first time Edgware have taken part in the ECB Club Championship which was opened to non-Premier League clubs in 2022. Edgware are likely to be the lowest ranked team in the competition by some distance and are unlikely to progress past the first preliminary round. However, the club's executive committee feel the game will be a great opportunity for the players to test themselves against the best players in the country.
Competition Format
The draw is split into 16 regional groups (Prelim Rounds to Round 3), before eventually consolidating into a national knockout stage (Round 4 to Final). The teams in Edgware's group are as follows:
Amongst Edgware's potential opponents include Aston Rowant and Teddington, who won the Home Counties Premier League and Middlesex County Premier League in 2022 respectively. Should Edgware pull off the upset of upsets, they would face Teddington in Round One.
All matches are 40-overs per side and the game will be live-streamed on Edgware's Youtube Channel.
Thoughts of the Players
"Look, let's be honest. We're looking at a San Marino type of fixture here. We've got nothing to lose and Malden Wanderers seem like a great bunch of lads. We'll give it our best but we admit we go into the competition with low expectations" spoke club chairman Ciaran Hosty, at a local Burger King in North London.
"30th April yeah? I think I'm away that week." said Saturday XI leading wicket-taker Dean Veerapen on his way to MOT the bean mobile.
"We're definitely screwed, but we'll have a laugh" said club captain Sajith Sriwickramasekaran.
