How the Ogbimi Brothers are revitalising Edgware Cricket

In 2019, Clive Ogbimi led Nigeria to it's first ever Under-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa. A former Nigerian international himself, he also played for Blackheath Cricket Club in Kent for many years before returning to his country of birth. However, as Clive has transitioned into coaching in the UK, his two sons, Moses (15) and Joseph (13) have taken Edgware Cricket by storm.

It was a bright sunny day in May this year when Edgware took on Northwood Town Cricket Club in the Hertfordshire Saturday Cricket League and on the teamsheet were two brothers making their debut. Moses, a tall leg-spinner and a cat in the field and his younger brother Joseph, an enterprising fast bowler with the batting technique and temprement of someone twice his age. To say the brothers left an impression would be an understatement. With the bat, Joseph (who batted at 10), made 13 as he swept and drove Edgware to a competitive total. With the ball, Moses took 2-1 off 1.4 overs, took a spectacular one handed grab at gully and his younger brother finished with figures of 5 overs, 3 maidens and 0-3.

In the weeks and months that have followed, the Ogbimi brothers have driven Edgware to a 6-2 record in the league that leaves them in third place just a point behind 2nd place Batchworth. Brilliant performances have included Joseph scoring 25 not out off 61 balls against West Herts with a certain Champaka Ramanyake in the opposition (18 test matches for Sri Lanka), Moses taking 3-31 against Abbots Langley and just last week, Joseph taking 2/20 off 7 overs whilst opening the bowling against fellow promotion hopefuls Royal Herts.

"The two of them have been a breath of fresh air. They are obviously very talented, but they bring a lot of energy to the team as well and the captain has found them an absolute dream to manage. I'm sure they have their sights set on much bigger things than Edgware, but whilst they are part of the team, we can't wait to see more extraordinary performances" spoke Chairman Ciaran Hosty.

The Ogbimi brothers aren't the only brothers to have played for Edgware, perhaps the most famous includes hall-of-famer Sajith Sriwickramasekaran and his older brother Naresh who have played over 150 maches between them thus far and scored more than 2,000 runs. Similarly, brothers Nick and Rahul Kothari also played over 110 matches for Edgware.

The next assignment for Moses will be 2nd place Batchworth, who Edgware host on Saturday. We wish the boys the best of luck!
