Perfect start as Edgware down Cockfosters

You don't realise how much you've missed cricket until you're back playing it after a long, cold winter. The weather was set fair last weekend at the beautiful Cockfosters Cricket Club on Chalk Lane as Edgware Cricket Club looked to avenge the loss in 2021.

Edgware won the toss and elected to field and things couldn't have gone much better for the boys in blue as Mr. Reliable, Rahul Kothari completed a magical opening spell which finished 4/10 off 5 overs and most importantly meant he became the first Edgwarian to pass 100 club wickets (from just 69 matches). When Sajith Sriwickramasekaran removed Emil Martyr for 0, Cockfosters were left reeling at 32-5 off the opening 10 overs. Unfortunately for the home side, things didn't improve as Dean Veerapen removed Stanley Thomas to leave Cockfosters 35-6. Gavin Bain and Samien Roy provided some stubborn resistance as Cockfosters edged beyond the 50 mark, the latter playing a delightful clip of the legs to register his first boundary of the day.

However, when Ananya Dixit removed Gavin Bain with a ball that skimmed along the surface, the end was nigh and Cockfosters slipped to 54-9 and were within reach of Regal's 69 all out (the lowest total registered against Edgware). Ian Bright and Phil Chamberlain were having none of it though and between them put on 28 for the 10th wicket stand. The tail-enders nonchalantly took on Kabeer Soni and Vidanda Galgamuwa, expertly finding the gaps and evading the waiting fielders to move Cockfosters onto 82. The magical maestro that is Vidanda Galgamuwa soon had his way though, as he fired a flipper into the middle stump of Ian Bright and led the boys into the pavilion after a warm 28 overs in the field.

With a small total to chase, albeit on a tricky pitch, the Edgware openers set to complete the job with a clean sheet. Ciaran Hosty and Nakul Jilka looked to attack Cockfosters' opening bowlers and found the gaps with regular occurrence as they raced to another 50-wicket partnership for the first wicket. Ciaran Hosty reached his 16th club fifty in 36 deliveries as a misfield in the covers allowed him to scamper two before Nakul Jilka hit the winning runs with an on drive over the diving fielder at deep mid-wicket against captain Ian Bright.

It was Edgware's first opening day win since 2017 and the the club is looking good to push for promotion places in both the Saturday and Sunday leagues in 2022.
