Sajith Sriwickramasekaran steps down from Edgware CC captaincy
Sajith Sriwickramasekaran has officially stepped down from his role of Club Captain after an incredibly succesful stint that saw the club transition into Saturday League Cricket.
Sajith took over the club captaincy reigns in 2021 and after initially navigating through a difficult period in which Edgware lost club stalwarts Dharmish Bhatt and Jude Saverus respectivley, Sajith has gone on to captain the club on 54 occassions and boasts a 59% win rate (the highest of any Edgware captain to have led in 10+ fixtures).
Speaking of his decision to step-down Sajith wrote, "The decision to step-down was by no means an easy one and I couldn't have been prouder at having the opportunity to captain this team for as long as I did. It's quite likely I'll be moving away in the coming months, so it makes perfect sense to let someone else take over the mantle during the offseason and prepare for 2024 in the best way possible. It's been a journey and I've learned alot from and about my teammates during my stint. In my first year, I was playing injured and in my second year, it was my rehabilitation phase post-surgery. I never really felt I was at my physical best to be able to contribute as a player and almost felt like a "fielding" captain. This past season was my opportunity to prove I still had something to offer with the ball and I worked obsessively on my bowling to improve".
And work on his bowling, he did. Sajith had a tremendous end to the season taking 15 wickets at 6.33 in his final 5 matches. He also led the boys in blue to an unbeaten Saturday League campaign which saw Edgware complete promotion to Division 10 for 2024 and also ensure Edgware completed their best season (by winning percentage) since 2016.
Ciaran Hosty, Club Chairman wrote "Losing Sajith as a Captain is one thing, but the potential of losing him as a player is an entirely different prospect. What Sajith brings to the table and to the club is unquantifiable. Not only is he one of the most talented players to ever step onto the pitch for Edgware but his influence on the boys in the field and the the admiration he holds off it, is what sets him apart. I can only thank Saj for taking on the role of captain back in 2021 and he has more than delivered in terms of performance but also he's ensured that the ethos of the club remains strong and he has left the team in a better position than when we took over it.
Club legend Nakul Jilka is set to take over club captaincy on an initial one-year deal and Vidanda Galgamuwa is set to be his right hand man as vice. Both players have already captained the club on 12 and 13 ocassions respectivley and will be well set to guide the club to greater success in 2024.
